The INSEAD Social Entrepreneurship Conference

The 2013 INSEAD Social Entrepreneurship Conference and Reunion is designed to advance thinking and knowledge of the field, promote an exchange of knowledge and experience, and facilitate the growth of social entrepreneurship. The event in Madrid is likely to attract one of the largest and most geographically diverse groups of ISEP participants to date. Due to the growth and increased interest in social entrepreneurship across Spain, its proximity to Africa and other developing parts of the world, the technological expertise brought by Universidad Politécnica de Madrid and the innovative work Fundación Banesto itself has carried out, the aim is to tap into the knowledge, experience and expertise to address some of the most important challenges society and its social entrepreneurs.
Theme: Technology, Innovation and Social Change

The opportunity of meeting in Madrid offers a unique opportunity to bring together local social entrepreneurs, business and public sector leaders, academics and our international network of leading social entrepreneurs. The challenge of undertaking such a project within the context of social and economic turmoil taking place both in Spain, across Europe and in much of the world.
The role of technology in promoting social change was identified as the central theme for the conference. Many aspects of both high and basic technological innovations will be discussed including healthcare, energy, education, finance, food & agriculture, and travel & culture. This is true, not only of advanced information technology, but also basic technologies that bring water, health, food, and improve basic livelihoods. Again, Madrid and its technological institutions, the compelling social needs and the innovation it houses offers us an opportunity to combine the three. Therefore, we propose that the conference and related events focus on the role and relationship of technology, innovation and social change.

The Conference and Surrounding Events:

.    1) International Social Entrepreneurship Conference  (Thursday, 25 April afternoon: 16-20h & Friday 26 April morning: 09-14h,): A public event open to the community focusing on the central theme of technology, innovation and development. Mikado Consulting, is a not-for-profit consulting company commited to create social impact through crafting innovative models and solutions. Mikado believes and strives to create partnerships among private sector, civil society, academic institutions and international organisations for multi-dimentional development.

Mikado has been certifiedas Turkey's first B Corp!

What is B Corp?

B Corporations are a new kind of company which uses the power of business to solve social and environmental problems.

There are currently over 600 Certified B Corporations from 18 countries and sixty industries working together toward 1 unifying goal: to redefine success in business.

Government and the nonprofit sector are necessary but insufficient to address society’s greatest challenges. Business, the most powerful man-made force on the planet, must create value for society, not just shareholders. Systemic challenges require systemic solutions and the B Corp movement offers a concrete, market-based and scalable solution.

Certified B Corporations voluntarily meet higher standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability. They distinguish themselves in a cluttered marketplace by offering a positive vision of a better way to do business.  They are trying not just to be the best in the world, but to be the best for the world.

B Corporation movement is like a LEED certification, but for a business, not just a building.
The performance standards are comprehensive and transparent.  They measure a company’s impact on its employees, suppliers, community, and the environmental.

Mikado is proud to be a Certified B CorporationTM.

*Quotes from past Social Entrepreneurship Bootcampers*

·         Best experience I had at INSEAD so far (learning wise). Thank you so much. While before I only thought that this could be an option for the future, I am really inspired to do something asap.

·         “Very inspiring, motivating and well-structured. The bootcamp has now taught me how to start up my own social enterprise and I am thankful for that!”

·         "I went into the weekend completely blank, but got so enthusiastic about most of the ideas that I lost track of time every time we were working on our project. How cool is that! :) I liked all the examples of actual initiatives that were given to clarify a task or to just show us what is out there... The atmosphere in the group is set to be very stimulating and open so that everyone feels comfortable to share their more personal thoughts and ideas  - this is great! - A perfect balance between entrepreneurship & social impact in one weekend."

Summary: Learn how to create a meaningful social impact venture. Identify the problem, define your theory of change, construct your business model, and measure your impact. During the bootcamp you will go through an intense and tailored 48-hour methodology for designing a novel solution that addresses a neglected societal problem. We will start on Friday at 8:00pm and by Sunday 5:00pm you will be presenting your social innovation to a judging panel of social impact experts and investors. It promises to be a challenging and exciting weekend.

All your meals during this period are taken care of – from dinner on Friday at 8:00pm to an afternoon coffee break on Sunday. We start with breakfast at 8:30am on both Saturday and Sunday. We will finish most likely by 9:30pm on Saturday (though you are welcome to stay and continue working) and finish the bootcamp by 7.30pm on Sunday.

You can have a team formed already or come individually. You can bring a problem that you want to address or come with a clear mind and be open to focus on problems proposed by other participants. We will use the Friday evening to do a brainstorm of societal problems and form teams of two to four participants who will work together for the rest of the bootcamp in coming up with an effective solution. Please note that societal problems also include inefficiencies that lend themselves to new financial innovations for social impact as well as new government or social sector initiatives. A goal of the bootcamp is to form bonds and connections that last during INSEAD and beyond, aligned by a goal of achieving social impact in a meaningful career.

We hope that you will have a great experience of learning and inspiration during the weekend and that you will develop a high potential project that you can move forward during your INSEAD degree and turn it into a valuable social innovation.

Please contact Christine Driscoll Goulay at Christine.driscoll@insead.edu with questions.
