Last week, INSEAD welcomed alumni, students, entrepreneurs, and impact investing practitioners to the annual INSEAD Entrepreneurship Forum. This year, the forum focused on Impact Investing: Creating an Industry from Innovations.  Credit Suisse sponsored the event.

With about 200 participants, the day began with an insightful keynote speech by Stewart Paperin, President of the Soros Economic Development Fund.  Lively debates followed on whether you can achieve both profit and social impact - with INSEAD's Professor Filipe Santos and Uli Grabenwarter of the European Investment Fund. Additional panels and debates focused on the sector from the point of view of various actors: Funds, Intermediaries, Limited Partners, Entrepreneurs.

Conversation focused on the definition of impact investing, how it is interpreted by various investors as well as funds, how to find sustainable business models for capacity building intermediaries as well as funds at the early stage of investment, and how to re-brand the image of impact investing to unlock mainstream capital.

We also were lucky enough to have a number of INSEAD MBA and EMBA alumni present to pitch their socially and/or environmentally conscious business to the members of the audience.

The day was a great success, and many are now asking that we make it an annual event, potentially drilling down further into specific case studies to really draw out the complexities involved in the current models and structures.

A conference report and access to a video of the presentations will be available shortly on our web site.  To see some photos of the event, please take a look here. (Photos by www.danongabrielthe.com). For any questions, contact Christine Driscoll Goulay.

Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM) was the site of this year’s INSEAD Social Entrepreneurship Conference: “Technology, Innovation and Social Change” on 25 - 26 April. More than 150 people from more than two dozen countries participated in the invigorating event populated with speeches, roundtables, panels, pitching sessions, and many opportunities for networking. Even more events surrounded the conference itself including a student venture competition, site visits, the ISEP Reunion and the magic of Madrid itself.
The topics and activities focused on innovative applications of technology, both high-tech and basic-tech that enable social entrepreneurs to address important unmet social needs. It drew upon the unique expertise brought by INSEAD’s diverse global network of social entrepreneurs, partners including Fundación Banesto, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), Telefónica, idtUPM, ONGAWA-Ingeniería para el desarrollo humano, and more.

28th Sustainability Executive Roundtable -
"Sustainability and HR, Challenges for the Firm and its Members"

The 28th INSEAD Sustainability Executive Roundtable will take place on Friday 21st September 2012 on INSEAD Europe Campus in Fontainebleau, France.
As sustainability has always been an aim of any corporation in today’s world it has become impossible to turn it into a business reality without taking into account all relevant externalities.
The 28th Roundtable will examine the implications for Human resource management. What are the sustainability competences? And the sustainability talents? Or does competence suffice? Is sustainability necessarily an organisational characteristic rather than a person’s characteristic – i.e. will people always be less sustainable than their members? And what are the requirements for people to become more sustainable? What new dualities do they have to manage?

Jakarta Social Entrepreneurship Conference - "Social Economy 4.0: Innovation, Sustainability and Responsibility"

This year’s INSEAD Social Entrepreneurship Conference took place in Jakarta on 16 May 2012 focusing on the theme “Social Economy 4.0: Innovation, Sustainability and Responsibility". It was our first time in Asia and our largest, most far-reaching series of events to date.

The conference attracted nearly 300 participants from more than 20 countries in Asia, Europe, North and Latin America and the Middle East. It was surrounded by several days of additional activities including a student social venture competition, CEO Forum, Senior Executive Implementation Workshop, numerous site visits to local social entrepreneurs, and a reunion for graduates of the INSEAD Social Entrepreneurship Programme (ISEP).

To make these events possible and to promote ongoing social entrepreneurship growth in Indonesia, INSEAD joined with local partners, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), BINUS Business School, and Yayasan Cinta Anak Bangsa (YCAB Foundation).

To initiate the collaboration, Muhammad Ariono Margiono, Firdaus Alamsjah, and Ahmad Seichi Ramadhan of Binus carried out new research to identify the attitudes of “Senior Managers in Indonesia on Social Innovation” which was first reported at the CEO Forum.

From INSEAD’s side, Hans Wahl, prepared a discussion paper on “Social Economy 4.0” to serve as a platform to examine trends, assess needs and opportunities, and develop initiatives to address them within Indonesia and the region as a whole. A discussion paper was circulated in advance of the conference and has been placed on the INSEAD Social Entrepreneurship Blog to allow for the discussion that started in Jakarta to continue beyond the conference itself.

A Conference report will be avialable soon...
