The 2015 International Social Entrepreneurship Conference - CANCELLED

We are saddened to announce that, after reviewing the planning and preparation of this year’s INSEAD Social Entrepreneurship Conference in Amsterdam, we have taken the difficult decision of cancelling the event for 2015. Following discussions with our colleagues, INSEAD alumni and those organising the related events, we came to the conclusion that we would not be able to deliver the high-level programme we would expect with the human resources and time available. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this change might have caused and we do hope to come back to Amsterdam in the future.

Plans are already underway for our 2016 Conference and Reunion in India and we hope to come to a decision on the location, date and theme soon.

The 2015 International Social Entrepreneurship Conference and Reunion in Amsterdam/Nyenrode postponed to the fall

The INSEAD Social Entrepreneurship Conference in Amsterdam/Nyenrode and Reunion have been postponed to a date in the fall of 2015 (probably October). We have made this change to better develop synergies with other INSEAD and Social Entrepreneurship events and to respond to the strong interest in the Hackathon process around which the conference is being developed. We are currently in discussions with our colleagues, INSEAD alumni and those organising the related events and hope to be able to determine a new date for this event by the first week of April. Please visit our website or this blog for updates and further information or send us a note at ISEP@insead.edu expressing your interest and we will be sure to keep you posted on the new dates and further plans.

MyMind Expanding Access to Mental Health Services

Krystian Fikert (ISEP 2010-Singapore) established MyMind in 2006 in response to a troublesome gap in providing mental health services in Ireland. People suffering from anxiety, stress, depression, addiction, relationship issues, workplace problems and other issues affecting their mental health found themselves facing long public sector waiting lists or high costs for private services. MyMind was created as a community-based mental health service that draws on the power of information technology to provide efficient, low-cost help when people need it.

Based in Dublin, MyMind provides accessible and affordable counselling and psychotherapy, in different languages, through a team of over 100 mental health professionals. We are dedicated to providing early intervention into mental health problems, to help to build people’s resilience and avoid more serious problems developing in the long term, so first appointments are usually offered within 72 hours. The “MyMind Online” system is able to empower clients to book their appointments online or by phone, bypassing the hindering and expensive referral process. In addition to its face-to-face services, it also provides online support via the MyMind Online platform, and the new “MyMind at Work” programme that provides information and skills workshops to workplaces in order to enhance staff resilience and wellbeing.

It has now teamed up with Twilio.org an international organisation whose mission it is to harness the power of advanced communications technologies to enable social and non-profit organisations to help engage their audience, expand their reach and focus on making a real change in the world. This has already enabled MyMind to become a global leader in creating fast, efficient, and secure mental health services for those in need and continue to create opportunities for growth to meet the demand in Ireland and beyond.

Victoria Kisyombe Receives
 Global Leadership
"Economic Empowerment Award"

Victoria Kisyombe (ISEP 2011-Fontainebleau) was awarded the Vital Voices Global Leadership Economic Empowerment Award by Hillary Rodham Clinton at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC for her trailblazing work to empower women through micro leasing in Tanzania as founder and CEO of SELFINA.

Founded in 2002, Selfina's mission has set out to increase the incomes and employment of women who own micro enterprises in Tanzania, by helping them and their businesses grow. Its innovative use of assets to access credit has made it a pioneer of micro-credit and micro-leasing that have enabled women who would not otherwise be able access financing. SELFINA has maintained a particular focus on widows and young girls and helping them overcome customs and traditions that often make it difficult for women to own land and assets. In its 11 year history, SELFINA has empowered more than 25,000 women with a total credit worth 25 billion Tanzanian Shillings [approximately $16 million US dollars]. Over 200,000 lives have been impacted through the benefits accrued. Women are now owners of their own businesses and more than 125,000 jobs have been created. Victoria was herself widowed but made good use of Sero, a cow left behind by her late husband as a productive asset to generate income. (see video)

Vital Voices Global Partnership was co-founded by Hillary Rodham Clinton to honour and celebrate women leaders around the world who work to strengthen democracy, increase economic opportunity and protect human rights. In addition to Secretary Clinton, this year’s awards were presented by television news anchor Norah O'Donnell and fashion designer and activist Diane von Furstenberg to the five outstanding women from Syria, Iraq, Tanzania, India and Guatemala. Past honorees and presenters have included Oscar winner Sally Field, Angelina Jolie, Aung San Suu Kyi, Ben Affleck, Reese Witherspoon and Malala Yousafzai.

Meena Vaidyanathan & niiti Consulting Wins Ashoka Globalizer Economic Inclusion Award

Congratulations to Meena Vaidyanathan (ISEP 2009-Singapore) founder of  niiti-Consulting for being selected as a winner of the 2014 Ashoka Globalizer,  Economic Inclusion Ecosystem Fund Award for a joint project with Karmany  on “Clearing the Uncertainty of Working in the Social Sector”. The project will develop a web-based tool kit to address the crying need for talent management in the social sector and the need to build a pipeline and a process to address individual basis.

Niiti has recognized that there is a crying need for talent management in the social sector but many number of social enterprises lack the resources to build a pipeline and a process on an individual basis. In response, Karmany and niiti have joined together in the hope of developing a web-based tool kit that helps social organizations assess and evaluate their talent management needs. In addition, it equips professionals with the information and tools to make informed career transitions into the social sector on the other. The tool seeks to serve as a platform to spur competition within the industry, and collective sharing that brings a far larger awareness of the credibility of the social sector to non-industry professionals.

The 28th INSEAD Venture Competition (IVC) showcases social enterprises!

On June 20th, the 28th INSEAD Venture Competition (IVC) was held by the INSEAD Centre for Entrepreneurship (ICE) on the Fontainebleau campus with videolink to Singapore. The competition is a platform for INSEAD MBA and EMBA candidates to showcase their entrepreneurial skills and ideas and bring these ideas forward into venture plans, which in turn will become real business ventures.

This year, the winning team, Kookooli, and the team which won the Coromandel Foundation Social Impact Award, Missing Middle, were both launched during INSEAD Social Entrepreneurship Bootcamps. Kookooli was launched during the Fontainebleau October bootcamp and Missing Middle during the November Singapore bootcamp. It is exciting to see the bootcamp methodology pay off with such creative and impactful ventures.

The winning team, Kookooli, took home a prize of 10,000 Euros and consisted of MBAs Eirik Hogner, Frederik Kongsli and Itamar Stern. Kookooli is an online marketplace where people can buy fresh food from local food producers at their own convenience. Through their web and mobile platform, consumers can access a wide-range of top quality food products at affordable prices. Kookooli will pick up freshly made products directly from the producers and then deliver the orders to customer’s homes or to centrally located pick up points.

The second prize winner, Team Treasure Bowl, took home a prize of 5,000 Euros and consisted of MBA members Angela Flaemrich, Aleksandra Zhdanova, and Leon Williams. Their idea involves an innovative toy product for kids in Europe.

Finally, the winning team of the Coromandel Foundation Social Impact Award for 5,000 euros, was team, Missing Middle, composed of MBAs Mehmet Energin, Lisette Steins, Marieke Ebbing. When one of the team members worked for a micro-finance organization in Uganda, she saw that small loans can have a large positive impact on borrowers’ lives. She also realized that these loans were merely a short-term solution for entrepreneurs – they did not manage to grow their new business beyond a certain limit. Once the entrepreneurs outgrew the micro-finance loans, there was still a long way to go before they could fulfil the requirements of a retail bank and receive the necessary funding for scaling up.

In addition to the strong social impact seen in the winning teams, ICE was also delighted to welcome two of our INSEAD Social Entrepreneurs in Residence to campus for the finals. Charlotte Hochman served as a finalist judge, and the keynote speaker for the finals was Ms Caroline Watson who is the founder and director of a social venture in China, Hua Dan.

ICE is grateful to the IVC sponsors for their support of entrepreneurship at INSEAD and to alumnus, Sajan Koch EMBA’08, for his generous contribution to the Coromandel Foundation Social Impact Award.

INSEAD alumna launches social enterprise, Lulea, producing luxury leather goods for the global market. This is her story…

Topy Namasaka-Muga (MBA 2012J)

I graduated from INSEAD in July 2012. While undertaking my MBA, I shared the beginnings of the Lulea story with my colleagues at school. Lulea is a social enterprise which specialises in training Kenyan workers to create sustainable luxury leather goods for the global market. Together with five of my group members in the Business Planning entrepreneurship elective, we developed the idea for Lulea and worked out a viable business plan. The INSEAD faculty, and in particular Christine Driscoll Goulay, the Associate Director of the Social Entrepreneurship Initiative, supported the venture and introduced me to a number of other social entrepreneurs. After months of hard but rewarding work we have just opened the doors to the Lulea Centre of Excellence in Kenya (a training facility) and have trained a small team of employees, some of whom are sourced from a nearby women’s shelter (Baraka Women's Shelter).  I am happy to say that we are now ready to take orders and in order to grow we have recently launched an Indiegogo crowd funding campaign -  https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/lulea-we-make-the-bags-you-make-the-difference. Please take the time to check out our campaign and support and share wherever you can.

The meeting culminated with an excursion through some of Paraty’s beautiful islands. Click here for photo collection.

INSEAD joined as a strategic partner with three dynamic Brazilian groups, the Institute of Corporate Citizenship (ICE), ARTEMISIA, and Vox Capital to organise our annual conference, this year taking place in São Paulo, Brazil. The three days of events were aimed at strengthening the ecosystem for the Social Finance and Impact Business in Brazil and across the region. At its conclusion, the launch of a Brazilian Social Finance Task Force was announced to be led by some of the nation’s leading business and government figures with the aim of creating mechanisms to promote the structures and flow of resources to meet the needs of this burgeoning field.

More than two dozen ISEP Network members attended the conference and the reunion (in spectacular Paraty) that followed on 8-9 May.  The reunion featured sessions on Scaling Social Enterprises and Risk Management presented by INSEAD Professor Filipe Santos and Timothy Ma Kam Wah (Hong Kong, ISEP 2009-S) in addition to numerous meals and informal discussion opportunities to become familiar with each other’s work, challenges and opportunities.
