Social Economy 4.0: Innovation, Sustainability and Responsibility

“Social Economy 4.0: Innovation, Sustainability, and Responsibility"
The world of business, economics and public policy has been focused on the future and the next generation of relationships that lie ahead. In an effort to carry out a similar look into the future for the social economy we have drawn on Anatole Kaletsky's framework presented in his recent provocative book, Capitalism 4.0 as one to examine the transformation that lies ahead for social entrepreneurs. The framework has been used in numerous other venues so we have also taken it on to examine four generations of the social economy and use it as a foundation for this year’s INSEAD Social Entrepreneurship Conference in Jakarta in Indonesia. The discussions were exciting, simulating and visionary. We would now like to take them online through this blog and promote a virtual exchange.

7th INSEAD Social Entrepreneurship Conference 2012

Jakarta Social Entrepreneurship Conference "Social Economy 4.0: Innovation, Sustainability and Responsibility"

This year’s INSEAD Social Entrepreneurship Conference took place in Jakarta on 16 May 2012 focusing on the theme “Social Economy 4.0: Innovation, Sustainability and Responsibility". It was our first time in Asia and our largest, most far-reaching series of events to date.

The conference attracted nearly 300 participants from more than 20 countries in Asia, Europe, North and Latin America and the Middle East. It was surrounded by several days of additional activities including a student social venture competition, CEO Forum, Senior Executive Implementation Workshop, numerous site visits to local social entrepreneurs, and a reunion for graduates of the INSEAD Social Entrepreneurship Programme (ISEP).

To make these events possible and to promote ongoing social entrepreneurship growth in Indonesia, INSEAD joined with local partners, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), BINUS Business School, and Yayasan Cinta Anak Bangsa (YCAB Foundation).

To initiate the collaboration, Muhammad Ariono Margiono, Firdaus Alamsjah, and Ahmad Seichi Ramadhan of Binus carried out new research to identify the attitudes of “Senior Managers in Indonesia on Social Innovation” which was first reported at the CEO Forum.

From INSEAD’s side, Hans Wahl, prepared a discussion paper on “Social Economy 4.0” to serve as a platform to examine trends, assess needs and opportunities, and develop initiatives to address them within Indonesia and the region as a whole. A discussion paper was circulated in advance of the conference and has been placed on the INSEAD Social Entrepreneurship Blog to allow for the discussion that started in Jakarta to continue beyond the conference itself.

A Conference report will be avialable soon...

Education for Marginalised Ethnic Groups

Far into the Northwest Far into the Northwest corner of Thailand, in the hills surrounding Fang and into Burma, Ben Bowler and colleagues at the Blood Foundation are committed to providing education for the people of Shan State in Burma, those in displaced people camps from the civil war, and marginalised minority hill tribes on both sides of the border. With the support of revenue from their Monk for a Month programme at the Sri Boonruang Temple, they support literacy, primary education and community development initiatives marginalised ethnic groups on both sides of the border. In the photos, traditional weaving is taught to a new generation and a night-time Thai literacy programme is conducted for undocumented Shan migrant workers. They attend after a full day of work in orange groves to learn a language that will enable them to deal with health, safety and legal challenges in their daily lives. Across the border a network of schools set up in Buddhist temples compensates for a defunct Burmese education system. Read further blogpost on "Wandering Dhamma".

ISEP Visits Dialogue in the Dark in Singapore

Slightly less than a year after Cheh Hoon Choo-Yeo and Joyce Tang participated in the 2008 ISEP they opened the doors to Southeast Asia's first permanent Dialogue in the Dark exhibition at Ngee Ann Polytechnic in Singapore. DiD Singapore is the first exhibition housed within an educational institution and able to integrate this unique programme within an academic institution.

This year's ISEP participants were given a special opportunity to benefit from their predecessor's accomplishment by visiting Dialogue in the Dark. We met Cheh Hoon Choo-Yeo and Joyce Tang, their students who administer DiD as part of their studies in social entrepreneurship, and a very impressive team of guides who helped us find our way in the dark for one hour and offered us a unique insight into the life without sight.
